Henry Wadsworth Longfellow... I like him. I think if I were to have known him back in the day, I would either call him by his entire name, which would get very taxing if we spent a lot of time together, or I would simply call him Wad.

Wad has written some fabulous pieces, but just recently I came across this quote that I plan on loving forever. So on this ridiculous, over celebrated day, may I present to you Wad's thoughts:

A few days before Christmas, I noticed that two major purchases I made at Target went on sale in significant ways, adding a savings of $100 when all was said and done. I was grateful for this unexpected surprise and played the game of returning and then repurchasing my items. While at Target, I needed to get a Super Grover for Blaine and Ethan's teacher. She loves Super Grover and I was able to grab the last one.

This was the first time in the history of Christmas (maybe not) that I had all of my Christmas shopping done early and really the only thing I had to do besides preparing to hostess, was to wrap all of the gifts. Thanks to Dixie, my sister-in-law, we got that done in the time it took to watch The King's Speech.

As I approached the cashier, I noticed that he was clearly physically challenged. His hands were bent and he was at pace, but not speedy. I didn't mind and his line was short, so I continued forward. I greeted the young man and discovered that he was also verbally impaired. I probably talked to him as if he were hearing impaired, but said, "How ya doin' today?" I noticed right away that he looked at me when he spoke, and I appreciated that. He responded, "I'm not good." "You're not?" I asked. He looked at me and smiled really wide, replying, "Nope. I'm GREAT!" I noticed I was smiling really wide, too. "That's great!" I said.

He looked at me again and said, "Yep, I'm Great Scott." I looked up to see him showing me his name tag, which of course read 'Scott'.

I left the store smiling and chuckling because of his whimsical mannerisms and his energy that filtered through me in a matter of seconds. By the time I got to the car I was crying. Even now, a week and a half later, I well up as I think of this happy, bright, young man with visual and audible ailments that will never go away along with ignorance and jeers. Yet he shines with a contagious, positive outlook that may indeed live to stand the test of time. Great Scott reminded me once again not to sweat the small stuff, something I have truly been striving to do all year long and hope to continue for a lifetime.

It's Okay to Know Pain

Blaine's football team lost this weekend in the second round of their playoffs in football. It was a tough loss. I won't expound on the details of my opinions that won't change the outcome, but for as much as I love winning and feeling the excitement that comes from a win, it's okay to know the pain from a loss. No matter how much it hurts, you can definitely learn from the experience and certainly decide on how to move forward from it.

Some may criticize me for taking this picture of Blaine, but I love it. I love the fact that hard work, mental anguish and heart and soul went into Blaine's 6th grade football season. I love that it hurt this much to lose. To me, it shows me that Blaine worked his rear end off and he played with heart, which he did. He'll never give up; he'll only work harder next time.

We had a talk at church on Sunday and Mike talked about Roy Campanella, one of the first black men in history to break the color barrier in the sport of baseball. Known for his ability to catch and bat, Campanella was unstoppable until he was paralyzed in a car accident. The pain was a killer to his marriage and almost to himself. Eventually he was teamed up with a physical therapist that pushed him to work hard and he was able to regain some movement in his limbs. He found a way to be positive through his hardship. It took him awhile, but he had no where else to go...

We all struggle at some point, it's how we decide to conquer the trial that makes all the difference. I've been reading this poem over and over and over again lately. I've sent it to friends and have studied parts and pieces and quietly remind recite it to myself when I feel I want to succumb to trouble. It's a well known poem, but I love what it stands for: Being undefeated; unconquerable... INVICTUS

Cramp Christopher

Blaine's class went on a 3-day overnight field trip to Camp Christopher. Yes, I spelled it incorrectly in my title, but for some reason, anytime you want to say Camp Christopher, it comes out Cramp Christopher. Either way, the kids had a blast. We hiked, sang, educated ourselves, didn't sleep, challenged ourselves and bonded. Overall the trip was great!!! I have included some photos and a link if you'd like to see all of them. You'll notice that Blaine is being Blaine in every photo.

...And We're Back

Ethan made his own piece of history yesterday. After a month off the field for a groin and then ankle injury, Ethan kicked his first PAT as a St. Edward Eagle. It was a beautiful field goal and he was smiling. There are a lot more to come, so I'm grateful for his linemen who are big and strong. I also feel that Ethan recovered as quick as he did because the boys on his team were encouraging and the coaches were positive. The parents of his teammates were concerned and caring. E feels important and wanted and that made all the difference in the world! He absolutely worked his rear end off to get back on the field this week and I am so stinkin' excited for him!!!

The Dreaded Trash Bag

Does this put fear into your soul like it did me? Years ago, when playing outside for hours on end until it rained or it was bitter cold, we played outside. You came in to go to the bathroom or eat lunch, but that was pretty much it. Mud pies, climbing trees, playing tag, torturing someone and riding your bike was what we did all day long.

When we did play inside, we usually created quite a stir and would then be smart and clean up our messes or leave them for a few days until they mysteriously disappeared. "Where did my toys go?" The first few times, it really threw me off. I'd get nervous and ask. My mom would say, "I told you to pick up your toys or they became mine until you could put them away as I asked." I'm certain a few tears would be shed and after a few weeks or maybe a lifetime, I'd get the toys back. Eventually, I caught on that cleaning the toys up right away prevented me from not seeing my play things for weeks at a time.

This memory was stirred today as I began tackling the boys' rooms while they're away at school. Don't roll your eyes and tell me they should do it themselves. I know what I'm doing! My boys are hoarders; organized hoarders. Sadly, I tend to have a difficult time tossing things away as well. It's not the item itself, it's the memory it provides.

Now that school is back in session, I have been getting so many things done! I installed a new sump pump, rehung the ironing board thingy in the laundry room, re-splined the window frames now that it's cooling off in the house, and I washed the upstairs carpets. One of two things are going to happen: Either I'm getting new carpet or I'm installing hardwood floors upstairs, but either way something is going to happen. Boys are just breeders of filth even if they don't mean it!

I vacuum turf turds all the time and the list goes on...regardless, I started getting the itchies to keep organizing. Too hard!!! I'd start separating into piles and today alone I passed through time with collections of little animals and action figures; Playmobile people and rubber balls; little plastic army guys and matchbox cars. Basically what I ended up doing was separating everything neatly and then just restocking it. I've decided I'm not ready yet and I don't have to be. The boys are still at home and they still play when they can. I'm not certain what they play with, but when the time is right, I'll know when. For now, it's neatly organized, but not released into the ToyStory3 dreaded scene yet. Can't do it!!!!

The Boys of Fall

Have you heard Kenny Chesney's song, The Boys of Fall? For the most part, I don't enjoy Kenny's music because he sings about the same stuff in every song, however, the Boys of Fall is a great song and I absolutely love it! Goose bumps every time I hear it...every time.

Ethan and Blaine both had their season opener this weekend. Ethan and I got up early on Saturday morning and I brought him to the bus and then headed to see the beginning of Blaine's game until I headed out to Findlay to watch Ethan's team play. Ethan will be back on the field soon. I think after watching his mates play this weekend he's even more determined to heal as soon as he can!! Blaino had a great game on Saturday. He tackled a kid before scoring and helped win the game. I wish I had been able to see his entire game, but seeing his smile when he told me, said it all.

I had to show that Ethan was at least on the field. He was giving water to the refs as the trainers tended to an injured player.

Blaine's gonna mess this kid up...he's #36 white jersey.

After these games were over, we went to the Brown's Stadium to watch St. Ed's Varsity team play Glenville. Tough game. I thought both teams played sloppily, but it's the first game of the season and it's riddled with anxiety. Ed's won 17 to 14 on a field goal kick in overtime. Fun game, but I don't like all the anxiety.

This is Real

Blah, blah, blah...summer...blah, blah, blah...first day of school. Where did my life go? I won't even ask about summer, I'm jumping straight to my whole life! Just a few years ago and seriously, it feels like just last week, I took the boys to get their picture taken with Santa. This is what it looked like:

This is one of my all-time favorite pictures! Blaine is screaming and Ethan is just fake smiling hoping the picture would end soon. Too funny.

This morning felt the same to me. I wanted a picture of Ethan's first day of Freshman year and Blaine's first day of 6th grade. For some reason, what it took them to take the photo this morning reminded me once again of the former scene.

For the record, I didn't cry this morning. We were too busy for that. I'm so excited for both of the boys this year and hope they have good goals set up in their brains.

You'll notice that Ethan is in a walking boot. We're praying that comes off in 2 weeks.

Easter

Matt's grandma loved dying Easter eggs. It was tradition that we would get a gazillion dozen eggs and dye them. Who knows if everyone ever ate them all, but it was fun and it was always something to look forward to for the boys. The tradition has continued this year after Sito's passing and we decorated 5 dozen eggs in her memory and hopeful continued tradition. Of course egg dying came in conflict with Matt's favorite Easter show, The Ten Commandments. He would come in during the commercials to dye his eggs, one being an eye ball. Not sure what to say about that.

Clark Kent

Several years ago, I made all of the boys' Halloween costumes. They actually looked forward to it. Beavers, Batman, Brutus Buckeye (I have to say, that one was dang cool), skeleton, Travelocity gnome and Buzz Lightyear. Ethan loved Buzz Lightyear when he was little. Hard to believe he's made such a comeback 4 years later. It's probably why I cried so hard when we watched the last Toy Story movie and Randy was going off to college. That was a tough one.

Ethan is now 14 and able to attend the church dances. This particular dance was an animated dance where you could dress up as your favorite cartoon/super hero. Ethan desperately wanted to be Buzz Lightyear, but my time is such now that I would have needed 6 months warning to make him such a detailed get up. I suggested Clark Kent. It worked out just fine and he's been wearing the glasses ever since!

Blaine has had an exciting week. He went to the orthodontist for his regular retainer check up and to both of our surprise he came out with braces on! Mom forgot. Hey, it was a month ago! We discovered that he plays soccer much better without the mouth guard in. It's risky, but he can't breathe and it's cutting his mouth open. I'm going to see what I can find at the store. The one that he was given from the orthodontist is ginormous and he looks like Steven Tyler.

Ethan's class has once again had the fortune of going to a private class of one kind or another. Last Friday, they went to a Karate class. Ethan had a lot of fun. The instructor was giving him a run for his money. I thought it was great!!!

If you know Blaine, you know he planned this scene out in his mind well before I brought the camera to my eye.

I remember when I was young how time took forever. I would literally make myself sick with excitement over a birthday party or an overnight trip with friends. It's funny how we all look forward to getting to a certain age so that we'll be able to be involved with stuff or drive or date or whatever. Now? Now I just wish time would take a back seat for a minute and let me soak it all in. Life is moving way too fast for me. So fast, at times it hurts.

Some friends of ours needed a crib and some baby furniture. Because I've been trying to clean and organize, the idea of pulling the furniture out of one room to make space was great. The fact that it sat in my garage waiting for them to pick it up wasn't bad either. However, on Saturday, when the couple arrived, I was glad that I was downstairs working out. I knew if I watched that crib go, I would cry. I'm getting upset now even thinking about it. Both my boys have left their mark in that crib. Little teeth marks in the soft wood, the memories of hearing them tell me, "Mommy I a-wake".

Today, E towers over me at 14 and registering for high school. Blaine is catching up to me at 10 with a new set of braces and always making me laugh. I know it is in 4 short years that Ethan will be gone and probably gone forever to begin his adult life. I try only to keep that in the back of my head as I depress myself with the thoughts of how evil time can be.

Blaine and I are going to be good friends this upcoming school year. We'll be spending a lot of time together. Maybe to his dismay, but I'm really looking forward to it. He is so much fun and I anticipate he'll be teaching me a lot of cool things about his life. This is the part of time that I enjoy, if only I could hold onto it forever.

I Love It!

It's funny, but there is something so magical, or lucky about getting a snow day. For every day that I pray to have one, it never happens. Then, when you get that early morning call or text, you're too excited to fall back to sleep. At least for 20 minutes. I go running around the house turning off the alarm clocks. Let the kids sleep. They need the extra z's so badly. I couldn't find Ethan's phone. Sometimes he'll set his alarm on his phone. I finally had to call it. He answered. "There's no school. Turn your phone off and go back to sleep."

I haven't seen the boys for two days. They have been so good to shovel the driveway and the neighbor's driveway. The four boys have been digging tunnels, playing ice hockey and just laughing for the past two days. It's been great!! They even went to bed early last night after finding out that today would be another snow day.

I was disturbed to find out that the neighbor lady scolded the boys yesterday after they watched her rocking back and forth in the street trying to move her car. The boys, all four of them, have had experiences with this neighbor in the past who happens to drive sometimes when she shouldn't be. They were honoring their parents by not getting involved with her dealings. Finally, she yelled at them from the window of her car and asked if they would help push her car. They did, but not without her saying, "It's about time you helped me. I was waiting!" My son and his buddies have a far better attitude than I ever did at 14. If it were me, that lady would still be out there rocking her car back and forth. Not to mention that she refused my handsome scout's plea to purchase popcorn!!!! There, I'm done.

Getting Blaine ready to play outside is "like preparing for a deep sea expedition". Man, we laugh! He had me push his gloves on while I was in a chair with wheels. I thought that was hysterical! It's over however. We definitely have school tomorrow.

This Is How I Fixed My Dryer... Like You Care!

My dryer has been testing it's death lately. I had a friend come over and put a new heating element in it and it's heating just great! Now it's been making this horrible high-screeching sound. I watched a video on how to check out the problem and figured I could try it myself.

1. You need to take the screws out of the lint trap. My trap is on top.

2. Using a flat-head screwdriver, you slide it under the top of the dryer and the top will unsnap from plastic snaps that hold it down.

3. When you open the top of your dryer, this is what you'll see. That brown, stringy thing is the drum belt. This is what I thought was making all of the noise. Still in tact, but because it's 17 years old, I think I'll trade it out.

4. You'll want to get a 5/16" socket.

Go ahead and unscrew the front wall of your dryer. Don't worry, I somewhat know what I'm doing. The wall will be loose, but will not come off entirely. You need to lift up the front wall because the wall is clamped in down at the bottom. You'll probably see some wires attached to the door as well. When you get the door off, just go in the direction of the wires and stand it up out of the way.

5. If you're just going to replace the belt, you can put a large soup can under the drum to help hold it up. If you are taking out the entire drum to replace the pulley and wheels, just go ahead and loosen the belt off the pulley and the belt will come right off. Pull out the drum and put it aside.

6. If you think your dryer looks any better, take a look. I promise it's going to look just as gross as this. If you're just replacing the belt, go ahead and vacuum what you can out of there. You will take the new belt (you have gotten it at the appliance store; take your model #) and with grooves down, wrap it around the drum. Bend/loop the belt through the pulley (underneath) and attach/loop the belt around the wheel. It will then go around the drum. Reattach your front. Screw in the screws and you're good to go.

Otherwise, you can purchase a kit for around $50 to replace the wheels that hold up the drum and the pulley that holds the belt. The kit also comes with the belt and the little wheel clips.

Step Away from the Baked Ziti, Fool!

It's sad really, that it's been a month since I have blogged anything and now it's a recipe. An incredible recipe, however.

Baked Ziti
Ingredients:
2 pkgs Italian Sweet Sausage (NOT links)
16 oz. box of rigatoni pasta, cooked, but not too soft
3 jars of 10oz. pasta sauce. Personally, I use Ragu with roasted garlic
1 1/4 cup water
Fresh Basil- My thoughts is, if the basil is just going to go bad in the fridge, then use the entire package. If not, then add to your liking
Fresh Garlic- Again, I used 3 cloves because I LOVE garlic, but you may not, so use what you want
1 cup fresh shredded parmesan (bagged or block)
1/2 tsp black pepper
Frozen Garlic Bread- I used the 10pc Toasted Garlic Bread
12 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup olive oil
2 medium Roma tomatoes

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400F.

Prepare sausage according to package directions.

In a large bowl, mix cooked sausage, cooked pasta, pasta sauce, water, chopped basil, garlic, Parmesan cheese and pepper. Mix gently. Place mixture into 9x13 pan.

Place the slices of garlic bread on top of the mixture and cover with mozzarella cheese. Dip the tomatoes in the olive oil and place on each of the pieces of garlic bread. I also put some dried basil on top for decor.

Baked uncovered for approximately 30 minutes or until heated through. Let stand ten minutes to help set before slicing and serving. Personally, I just turned the oven off at 30 min and let bake another 10.

3-Hour Reunion

We were able to see Chad and Shawn, Matt's cousins for just a short time a couple of weeks ago. It's always a treat to see them, but especially when Chad is home from work. Chad doesn't get to come home very often and it's always special for everyone when he gets to visit. Chad and Shawn are amazing examples to my boys and we just love them to pieces!

Take Me Out For a Golf Lesson. La la la la la la.

Playing catch up once again... Ethan's class was able to have a golf lesson. It was an amazing day on the course and the class was fortunate to have a professional golfer teach the students how to stand and swing properly. At the end of the lesson, the instructor gave each of the students their own golf club with a gripper! Can you believe it? I know, me either.

Ethan's class has been able to do some really cool things this year. By far, this was the best activity to date! The class was invited to LCCC to learn how to fence. In just a couple of hours they were in full gear and fencing! It was cool to see.

I don't even know how to catch up. I am supposed to be in bed, but Blaine just puked all over the floor in the Family Room, so I am now wide awake hoping that what was once not a problem for me, my gag reflex will settle down. Nasty. So funny. Blaine threw up and then said, "I knew I didn't like that meal". A few minutes later, he told me that he found his gum that he accidently swallowed. Nice. I will post more pictures of Blaine and his soccer game in the next day or two or three.

Man, where have I been? Everywhere and nowwhere at the same time! It's fall. It's football season, it's crsip air and homemade apple pies and stew. We're having a great time and staying busy. Constitution Day

Yeah, it was awhile back. Haven't had much time to post things. St. Joseph School, where I work, celebrated Constitution Day. We invited veterans to come and salute the flag and allow us to pay tribute to their service. Ethan and his classmate, Tim dressed in their scout uniforms and raised the flag. We sang the National Anthem and 'Proud to be an American'; Tim played 'Taps' on his trumpet. We then made an aisle of people and waved our flags to the veterans. It was very moving. I have always had a special place for service men and women.

My Little Visitor

So here, I have finally finished Lorinda's Christmas present for a belated birthday gift. Basically, it's just a special day treat that I get to give to her. Happy Birthday, dear Lorinda.

Ethan is at his third year of scout camp. He really loves it. I write this because part of writing this blog is a journal entry for me as well, but Ethan has been named Senior Patrol Leader. That's pretty cool. His fellow scouts elected him to this position. I appreciate that because there are older youth in the troop and that is cool that they have that kind of respect for Ethan. We were able to go for Family Night on Wednesday. Although I have a terrible picture of Ethan in his uniform, you can see a nice picture of his troop as well as a goofy one. My personal favorite, is Brother Thompson. Yes, he's an adult.
I'm pleased we went because 5 of the young men, including Ethan, were 'tapped' into the Order of the Arrow, which in scouting is a big deal. I guess in order to be accepted in to the OA, Ethan and fellow campers will be going through a rigorous camping experience in the fall. I'm not sure of the logistics, because I don't think the boys aren't able to talk about everything, but it's really a special part of scouting and not everyone is eligible.

Blaine will be able to go with Ethan next year. That is exciting. They were able to use the bows and arrows together, and next year Blaine will be able to shoot rifles. He seemed excited about that.

This was such tasty shrimp. I was really impressed that Blaine ordered it, tried to peel them, and ate them all, minus a couple I stole for taxes.

Ethan and Blaine spend a great deal of time in the water. Whether on vacation or not. Many times I'll hear the squeak of the garden hose in the back yard and then look out the window to see the boys and the neighbor boys soaked while playing soccer in the back yard. This is our 5th year coming here to OBX for Father's Day Week (I should say beginning Father's Day Week, otherwise some fathers may think it's a full week of Father's Day). By far, this is the hottest week we've ever had. It's steamy hot. I'm not planning on bringing my camera down to the beach because even last night at sunset my lenses were foggy. Just like me, the camera will have to acclimate itself to the heat. We're staying in a beautiful house this year. The epitome of what I would want in both a home and a beach house. Wood floors, tile floors, custom built for sure. Just stunning. I'm including a few pictures of Baby Charlie. He's a really good baby. Doesn't cry very much and when he does, it's not for long because someone is right there to pick him up.
I'm ready to suit up. I plan to walk down to the beach again. I earn my water time. It's a little over 2 miles to where we spend the day. It's a hearty walk. Yesterday I drank two bottles of water on the way there. I'm pretty sure I sweat it all out before I got to the beach. It felt good though. It always feels good to sweat like that. Cleans you right out.

You save, you plan, you pack, you play and then it's over. Just like that. Ethan had an amazing time at OSU Kicking Camp. He met a lot of cool kids and worked with a tremendous staff of coaches from all over the country. Added highlights included: Meeting Jim Tressel, playing in The Shoe, and seeing Terrell Pryor in workout gear (that was almost awkward). Blaine was a trooper and supported his brother through camp. He's a good little brother. So here's the highlight reel. Enjoy!

Lake Erie Nights

I love this time of year. The nights are longer, the weather's nicer and what else can one say, but it's summer! I love going up to the lake and seeing the sunsets. They're almost always like this and it's so cool! Anyway, today was the last day of school for all of us. Ethan went to Josh's house for his annual "School's Out Party" and Blaine went with some of his classmates out to lunch. By the time I got to pick him up, this is all that was left, of his clothes at least. He had such fun!

The Old Man

Have you seen Christmas Story? Of course you have. Picture the scene: It's Christmas morning and Randy is asleep on the floor (my brother used to do this) and mom and dad are sitting on the couch. Although happy with what you got, there was something you desperately wanted and didn't get. Try to remain positive, there's always next year. Then, Old Man Parker asks you what is in the corner behind the desk, sure enough it is the gift you wanted, the one you prayed to have (some kids do, I'm sorry).

Picture the scene yesterday at my house: Blaine has opened his gifts from family. I'm under the impression that we were getting him refill shots for his Air-soft gun. There it is, the unknown wrapping, the gift I couldn't quite figure out. Old Man Stencil has struck again. I can't say more than that because Blaine and Ethan are having an absolute ball outside. I can hear the plastic bb's going into the gun as I write this post. Sharpie markered targets were made and taped securely to the play set. Goggles are worn and skill is in play with Blaine's utter happiness with his Air-Soft Smith and Wesson Rifle.

It's all relative, right?

Freeport Restaurant

We went away for the weekend. Not necessarily by choice; well, by choice, but not somewhere I think we would have thought to have traveled for Memorial Day Weekend. However, Blaine had a soccer tournament in Erie, PA, and we drove about 2 hours west of here to attend. What a great soccer tournament the boys had! Blaine's U-10 soccer team is state champs as of two weeks ago and this weekend we earned the championship as well. His team is made up of a great group of kids and they are coached well and have a super time together.
Because all of the hotels were booked, we had to stay 11 miles west of the tourney. We planted ourselves in North East, PA., maybe 3 miles south of the lake (Lake Erie). Because it was Blaine's birthday (double digits, double tears, triple the fear), we thought we would take him out to eat. Before driving to our hotel, we explored the Erie area and found a couple of commercial joints and had some ideas. However, while the boys were swimming, I googled restaurants near our hotel and found the Freeport Restaurant. We made a great choice!!
It was interesting to discover that the state of PA paid Iroquois chiefs $151,640.25 for a portion of land called "The Triangle." It now encompasses North East Borough and Township, Greenfield, Harborcreek, Greene, Summit, Millcreek townships, the city of Erie, and parts of McKean, Fairview, Girard and Springfield townships. I learned this from their fancy menu.
Many of you wine connoisseurs may know that the Erie area is known for its wine vineyards, but North East is in the heart of wine country. In 1850 two men named Hammond and Griffith planted the first vineyard in the area. They thought that the combination of soil conditions and Lake Erie climate would be right for growing grapes. They were correct. The soil in our neck of the woods is a lot of clay, but even two hours west, it becomes more dirt-like and sandy being so close to the lake. I guess that's what grapes like. The grape industry is so abundant in the area, that the high school calls themselves: The Grapepickers. (We laughed at that... sorry).

Anyway, we had amazing food, no wine (just in case you were getting ready to throw), and an overall good time. I had baked scrod filled with crabmeat. Matt had Yellow Perch, Ethan had Southern Chicken and Blaine had Shrimp. We ate until we were sick. Could have been because we were out in the sun all day, but it was a great place to go and learn some history to boot.

Blaine and his 4th Grade class went to Cleveland to visit the USS Cod. It is a submarine that rests in a small spot on Lake Erie near the Great Lakes Science Center. Anyway, Blaine doesn't feel like telling me much about it right now, but here is a website if you'd like to check it out: http://www.usscod.org/ Supposedly it gets pretty warm down there, so pick a day that you don't want people to smell your stink in a small sub.

Chuck Norris

When we got Elvis, the boys named him after all sorts of new names were debated. He's a blue and he's like suede so thus the name Elvis. Officially Elvis Felinestein. That's a whole other story. A couple of weeks ago, Tom, a man at church caught the attention of the boys after he brought up Chuck Norris. We love Chuck Norris and the many sayings that come just by saying his name. Here's a sampling:

The other day I had Spanish Club after school. We were getting ready for Cinco de Mayo and we decided to make musical instruments and "play" food from Mexico. It wasn't very long into my club mastery, that I turned around to discover Blaine and his friend, Will, with mustaches. Eeeet does not end there mis amigos. So began the songs that attired these well markered nose neighbors. Something having to do with beans and someone stole my beans.

Newborn Wrinkles

I don't think there's anything quite as spectacular as newborns. They give you so much to think about. Not only do they boggle your mind with questions like how something so small can create such a big mess, or how something so sweet and precious can play mental mind games on an adult by only sleeping 1-2 hours a night. Babies are amazing creatures and I love their wrinkles and pea-pod toes. This is Jane's baby, Nicholas, only a couple of days old at the time of the picture.
Blaino tells me that "[Nicholas] has a lot of ripples" and then Ethan replied, "he's not a water fountain".

This year the Bunny brought Ethan and Blaine's most favorite things, cap guns. It wasn't seconds before the shoot outs began and then I pretty much didn't see them for the rest of the day. In fact, the chocolate and beans haven't been touched. They better watch out because as Skippy John Jones would say, "I love mice and beans". The chocolate is soon to be mine! By the way, for those of you who do not know Ethan very well (which is a sad thing for you, this is drama and a mix of sarcasm at its finest) Blaine and Ethan's trusty steed is featured below. She is no bigger than a football and is full grown. It's not a rat, it's not a guinea pig, it's Lokie, my brother-in-law and sister's dog.

An Easter Hurricane?

We came down for just a couple of days to spend Easter with my folks in North Carolina. We drove out a ways from home to go to a North Carolina Hurricane's game. It was great. We were able to tailgate before the game and because we've been so busy having fun we decided to decorate Easter eggs while tailgating. It was great. We were able to make our mess outside! Later, I'll show you the results of the cascarones we got. Besides going to the hockey game, we were able to see my sister who has my nephew in her belly. Charles III should be coming right before we go to the Outer Banks. That ought to be fun. I get to hold the little guy and then give him back. My first nephew! Yay!

There's Nothing Like Beef Stew

When it's cold outside, which it is, once again, there is nothing better than beef stew over egg noodles. Yummy! What makes the meal even better is homemade bread, but when your on a time crunch, you can throw this together the night before and put it in the crock pot as you're leaving the house. Just make sure you turn it on!

Recipe:

2 lbs stew meat, tossed in a bag with flour
carrots
potatoes
1/2 cup (or more) of red cooking wine, or substitute grape juice or beef broth
1 envelope of onion soup mix
14 oz can of whole tomato
1 bay leaf
garlic
1 can french onion soup

brown meat, toss it all in. That's it. Cook on low til dinner.

Molly took pictures of me last night at a dance that I was chaperoning. Obviously I was focused on the kids! I thought Molly was going to wet herself. It was so funny watching the kids jump on the velcro trampoline, I couldn't resist. I quickly figured out why Molly was smart enough to wear a skirt to last night's actiivity. Some of the boys were able to jump really high. It was impressive after I got on the jumping mechanism. Woohoo!

My grandfather, father, brother and now my son have all begun shaving at an early age. Ethan has been begging us for several weeks and so we finally gave in. Meat-Lover's Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients:
2 TBS olive oil
2 small onions
1/4 lb bulk Italian sausage
1 lb ground beef
1 tsp dried Italian herb seasoning
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp dried marjoram
1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 (14.5 oz) can Italian-style diced tomatoes
1 (14.5 oz) can Italian-style stewed tomatoes
1/4 tsp dried thyme leaves
1/4 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp dried oregano
2 tsp garlic powder
1 TBS white sugar

I prefer to use real garlic and I also like to add a bit of red pepper flakes for a kick.

1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat; cook and stir onions and Italian sausage until the sausage is browned aout 10 min. Transfer the sausge and onions to a slow cooker. In the same skillet, cook and stir the ground beef, Italian seasoning, 1 tsp of garlic powder, and marjoram, breaking the meat up as it cooks, until the meat is browned, about 10 min. Transfer the ground beef into the slow cooker.

2. Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, diced tomatoes, thyme, basil, oregano, and 2 tsp of garlic powde. Set the cooker on Low, and cook the sauce for 8 hours. About 15 minutes before serving, stir in the sugar. Serve hot.

Apple Pie Recipe

Here is the apple pie recipe:

9" 3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
dash salt
6 cups sliced and peeled apples (I use Melrose and Granny)

10" 1 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
dash salt
8 cups sliced apples

Crunch Topping: Using a pastry blender, blend 1 cup flour with 1/3 cup soft butter. Add 1/2 cup brown sugar and a tsp of cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg and 1/4 tsp cloves.

Bake in oven @ 425 for 40-50 min.

I use the pie crust recipe from Betty Crocker.

Two-Crust Pie: 10-inch

1 cup shortening or 3/4 cup plus 2 TBS lard
2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
7 to 8 tablespoons cold water

Sunday Dinner

We had Stake Conference today, which is a two hour meeting with all of the surrounding areas of our church. I got up early and made homemade spaghetti sauce and then when we got home I only had to make dessert(s). What I thought would only take a few extra minutes to throw everything together took me allllllllll day long. It's 11:pm now and I just finished cleaning up the kitchen. It was worth it, however, we had the missionaries from our church over and they enjoyed the meal. That's all that matters. We had salad, garlic bread, spaghetti, my mom's apple pie and in case no one likes apple pie, we had a brownie trifle for dessert. I can't wait to go to bed!

We brought some friends to Kirthland the other day and the two-year old was being two, so I offered to watch her so that her mom could enjoy her visit. What an awesome little kid. We had a blast. Elvis is the man!!

As many as you know, Archie, my most favorite cat of all times went to Cat Heaven last June. Elvis has been trying desperately to take his place and he's taking a lot longer than I expected. It doesn't help that he causes trouble for himself. He's a wonderful cat, he truly is, but he's a lot different. It's okay. Quite honestly, I think he needs a friend, other than Ethan and Blaine. Elvis wants so badly to play with a furry friend and Keesh really wants nothing to do with him unless he has leftover food.

Without knowing exactly, Elvis redeemed himself after Ethan did a study on Elvis for his Science Fair. Surprised by the award, Ethan took home first place in his age group for his study of Elvis'... well, Elvis' potty behavior. Just to be "fair" if you'll excuse the pun, there were judges from all over the place that came to judge. I just want to make it clear because Ethan was just as surprised as I was to receive a blue ribbon for studying cat poop.

Like Pulling Teeth

Have you ever asked someone who really cooks well what is in their special dish? Man, it's like pulling teeth. I've come to the conclusion that good cooks really have no idea what is int their meal, or it changes each time they make it so just throw anything in there and pray it comes out close to the first time. Rose used to come over every Monday and we would spend the day in the kitchen cooking my meals for the remainder of the week. This worked out great. One time we got tons of potato peels stuck in the kitchen sink. The garbage disposal couldn't handle them all so I thought my Kirby could. Not so much. ( I didn't try to suck up the peels if that's what you're thinking. There is a mechanism that will blow the air out, anyway, have Rose tell you. It was really funny to her. Of course any type of potato explosion would be funny to anyone except me, it was my kitchen!)

So this is Rose's meatloaf recipe. I have heard only marvelous things about my brother's. I gave up an opportunity this Thanksgiving to partake (which I regret), so until I get his recipe, here's Rose Lamie's Meatloaf. The white stuff on top is a parmesan gravy. Our family likes to doube it. I also bake my loaf at 350 til there's no blood. Yucky.

I promise you, it's strategic!!! They know you're starving, they know you have planned for weeks as to where you will sit in the room. They just know. Anyone who knows me, knows how much I despise potlucks or buffet dinners. I'm always the last in line and I always want to kill the person behind me who has already polished off their meal and is back in line for seconds before I've taken a small bite of my roast beef with mashed potatoes and CORN!! Ethan blew it for us this year. Never ask a tired 13 year old to run with a balloon between his legs like it's fun! We decided to take the kids to Cleveland yesterday for a trip to the Natural History Museum. Although it was loaded with people and strollers, we had a great time. Matt saw this item in a display and said, "What is that? A bra?" I assured him, it was definitely not a bra! When he walked away, I read the description of what exactly his "bra" was...uh huh.

So after we saw the dinosaurs, we parked at Matt's office and ate at the Corner Alley. We didn't talk much because we were STARVING!!!! I'm pretty sure my stomach ate my spleen, which my friend, Ben, told me is impossible. Thanks, Ben. I almost thought my sarcasm could become a reality. Are we still friends? We looked like a bunch of freaks at the bowling alley. Matt has that plastic smelly thing on his thumb from his basketball accident (he shread the tendons off the muscle or something crazy like that), Ethan has grown 2 more inches nt he the last week, so his size 18 pants look like capri pants on him, I'm taking millions of pictures and Blaine was gesturing with his body to direct the ball which way to go. The boys gave up and finally rolled the ball Grandma style. Matt couldn't even put his thumb in the hole, so he curled the ball up in his arm. It was hysterical. Next time, I want to have a different kind of competition, a chocolate eating one. I found a place called the Chocolate Bar and I'm pretty sure I want to eat a chocolate sandwich!

They have this inaccurate display at the Natural History museum that will show you what you'll like like as you age. I told Matt if he looks like that at 60, I'm leaving him. That's 20 years from now! Eugh! They do have a disclaimer to inform you that you may see different results based on your lifestyle habits. You think? I just hope when Ethan is 60 he doesn't still have braces (sorry Bishop). I mean to say that he doesn't wear braces for another 47 years.

Haven't posted any portraits of the boys in a while. Ethan has now contracted with me, and makes me sign a contract that I will only take 3 pictures of him at a time. Isn't it terrible and awesome when you see someone's crafty wisdom? Awesome because you are amazed at what people can come up with and the talents that they are given and terrible because you want to start a new hobby. My mom is no different... my aunts have been taking a stained glass class and making the coolest things. Mom jumped on board and don't you wish your Santa was hot like my mom's? I don't even want to begin to know how to do stained glass. It's probably just another craft that I will love and then won't be able to spend time doing it. Nice work, Mama.

Blaine Pulls the Plug

We had a baptism at church the other day and whomever filled the font pushed the plug in very securely because Elder Malbica, the one shrugging his shoulders above tugged on the string only to pull up the screw that is secured into the plug. Hmmm... Blaine and I looked at each other, looked at Elder Malbica and we knew we had a situation on our hands. After everyone was indulging in baptismal aftermath (food), Blaine stripped down from the waist up (is that an oxymoron?). Elder Strong held onto Blaine's ankles and Blaine plunged into the bottom of the font to grab the plug. Not once, but four times. I told Elder Strong later that it amazed me that Blaine would have that much trust in him because Blaine is not confident in the water, or should I say hasn't been until very recently. For those of you who know about Blaine's fear of the water, you would know how incredible this trust was. Personally, I think it was so he didn't have to take a shower when we got home because he was convinced that he had completed the task when he "bathed in the holy water". Blaine's thoughts, not mine, so he still took a shower.

I totally rot lately when it comes to blogging, but I will tell you that I am offically a parent to a teenager which is completely odd seeing how I'm so dang young. The boys decorated the house by rubbing balloons on their heads and then sticking them on the ceiling. We must have had 30 balloons up there. I"ll throw in a few pictures, but it was a lot of fun and I'm all on board with Baskin' Robbins Ice Cream Cakes. I almost, I mean it took everything I had, not to buy the pink purse cake. I think the only reason I didn't was because they didn't have my favorite flavored ice cream. Happy Birthday, E. No more "Daddy, gonna mow da mong?"

I'm pretty sure I have issues because I failed to post anything about our trip to CT for Thanksgiving besides pictures of the coolest 1 year old, Rocco. I never did mention that Uncle JT and Auntie Stephanie took ALL of us to Fenway Park for the day! We got to see Wally, the Green Monster, the press box, and even batted in the batting cages where the players bat. Jack had a sunflower seed shell stuck in his hat and we're pretty sure it came from someone famous. We even made Ethan the happiest Patriot's supporter on the planet, by stopping at Gillette Stadium on the way home.

This is What I Love the Most!!

These are the moments I live for...when there are quiet times during the day that the boys get to play with their loot and they play all day. At night when they go to bed, they leave their adventures on the floor and I am left to see what scene was taking place and will be paused until the next morning, when another adventure will begin. The scenes used to include Fisher Price little people and nowadays they consist of Playmobil and Lego's, but the idea is still the same and I'll just miss it so much when they are grown (I'm hoping they never do).

Just for the record, we are aware that Blaine is wearing a Penn State hat and an Ohio State shirt. We were supporting the Big 10 yesterday. The Penn State hat was removed for the Rose Bowl game.

So Long Dear Friends

When I was a little girl, my grandfather would always say "so long" versus "goodbye". I asked him one day why he did that and he said that goodbye means forever, whereas so long means so long until we meet again. A lot of tears were shed yesterday as we said so long to two dear friends that have touched our lives forever. Elder Postak and Elder Wright have made an impact on all "3" of my boys and myself and have marked a special place in our hearts. Although Elder Wright's transfer was a surprise, we will embrace the new guys who come, but they have some big shoes to fill. Just for the record, this picture was taken on a P-day (Preparation Day (Dress down day)).

Blaine's team won their division this last weekend at the Casa Tournament and were the U-10 Champions. Finishing an undefeated season, Blaine has learned a tremendous amount and is ready to take on indoor!! WooHoo Blaino, you are the MAN!

Ethan had a great football year. Sadly, it ended last week in their second playoff game. At the beginning of the 4th quarter the score was tied at 0 all. We lost by a touchdown. St. Joe's had a fabulous season and I just cannot believe that it's over! Go E!!
